Generate AI handouts
Handouts are the single most-loved AI feature on ApexMentum. They turn what used to be a 30-minute writing task into a 30-second click.
What an AI handout looks like
A typical generated handout is 1–2 pages, formatted with your clinic branding (logo, colors), and includes:
- What it is — a plain-language explanation of the condition, supplement, or protocol
- Why it matters for the patient — connected to their specific situation
- What to do — practical, actionable steps
- What to watch for — symptoms or side effects to track
- When to come back — recommended follow-up
Output is a polished PDF that lands in the patient's portal and (optionally) their email inbox.
Generate a handout
- Open 🎬 Content & Videos → Handouts, OR click the + Generate handout button from any patient's record.
- Pick a topic. You can:
- Type freely ("Hashimoto's and gluten")
- Pick from your saved topic library
- Generate from a recent visit ("recap of today's visit with Sarah")
- (Optional) Set personalization:
- Patient name — embeds in the handout for that personal touch
- Patient-specific notes — pulled from the chart if generated from a visit
- Pick a tone — gentle, direct, science-forward, or your clinic's saved house style.
- Click Generate.
In 20–30 seconds, the handout PDF appears. Preview it, edit any sentence inline if you want, then send.
Sending to the patient
After previewing:
- Send to portal — drops the PDF in the patient's Documents section
- Email — sends the PDF as an attachment with a short cover note
- Download — for printing or handing out in person
Each sent handout is logged in the patient's Timeline.
Setting your clinic's voice
In Settings → Content defaults, you can configure:
- Your house style ("warm but science-forward", "no-nonsense", etc.)
- A standard signature block
- Default disclaimers (e.g. "This information is educational and is not a substitute for personalized medical advice")
- Branding (logo, colors) — pulled from your main branding settings
The AI uses these every time, so handouts stay consistent across the team.
Limits and usage
Each ApexMentum plan includes a monthly handout budget:

Tips for great handouts
- Be specific. "Magnesium for sleep, dose 400mg glycinate at bedtime" beats "magnesium handout".
- Generate from the visit. When you generate from a chart note, the handout references what you actually discussed — feels much more personal.
- Edit before sending. The AI is fast and usually right, but it's a draft. Skim it. Tweak anything that doesn't sound like you.
